Maine Painter Barbara Engel Beebe (1931-2022) was born and raised in rural North Dakota. Beebe grew up chasing after sheep and riding in a horse-drawn sled to a one-room schoolhouse. A child of the Great Plains, she didn't take a running-water bath until well into her teens, yet fulfilled her father's dream of her attending college. A self-taught artist who practiced in many mediums, Beebe's jewelry was modeled in Vogue by Cindy Crawford and her paintings, drawings, and sculpture have been shown in galleries around the United States. Much of her work centers around her time on Friendship Long Island, a small island off the coast of Maine where she spent the second half of her life intentionally living as she had as a girl without running water or electricity. She was also a dear friend of ours, and we are proud to continue her career.
