Early in the spring, we launched on a collaboration with our friend Jamie Lyn Kara, a local textile artist, that would track the coming warm times. We love working with Jamie because her perspective on seasons and time align closely with our own. Moments are to be treasured, and can be captured in the way we live our lives every day and what we choose to surround ourselves with.
The result of the collaboration are two capsules of naturally-dyed goods. First was a collection of one-of-a-kind linen lampshades dyed using marigolds, onion skins, and other botanicals.
The lampshades sparked our imagination, so we ordered a big bolt of white linen and set up the sewing machine. After stitching a large tablecloth and set of napkins, we handed the pieces off to Jamie for a marking of the season. Throughout the summer, she would layer natural dyes onto the pieces. These additions would be celebrated through a harvest dinner, capturing the same sense of bounty and beauty the linens carry.
First came a simple base dye from kitchen and garden scraps.
To decorate the table, we added simple florals cut from our garden. To eat, we sourced 100% local food from our garden and animals, and local farms.
For high summer, Jamie hammered flowers onto the tablecloth as a runner and the corner of each napkin, impressing marigolds and cosmos as symbols of the season.
Again, we celebrated by serving a 100% local meal and decorated with flower exclusively from our garden.
We have immense gratitude for Jamie for helping us realize this vision of capturing the season as it progresses, and there's still time to join her for a workshop at Quittner, or another local venue, before the close of the season.
