Burning Peat: A close look at buckets for the Magazine ANTIQUES

As the temperatures begin to cool in the Hudson Valley, we are stacking wood and dreaming of evenings curled up around the wood stove. This led us to our topic for the September/October issue of the magazine Antiques: Peat Buckets.

These buckets don't turn up too often in the United States outside of well-curated antiques collections, but were a staple of homes in England, Ireland, Scotland, and other coastal countries in northern climes for centuries. They were function-first, somewhere to store the long-burning fuel harvested from peat bogs, while embracing the opportunity for tasteful ornament. 

For the magazine, we explored the form, function, and meaning of buckets at home by the hearth for centuries, and today.
